A MOTHER said she was charged an overpayment on her child support and lost $500 in benefits.
Facebook user Lindsey Rubly posted in a support group for parents of children with autism and pleaded for advice.

She asked if anyone had ever faced issues with their kids’ Social Security payments fluctuating.
Rubly claimed she usually got monthly payments of $463 for her Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
When 2024 started, she noticed the check shot up to $497, but this bonus came with a consequence.
“Then they said I got overpaid with child support and I didn’t and I showed them that I didn’t get overpaid,” she wrote.
CASH SLASHED
Rubly said her daughter’s Social Security was raised to $732 before she was told the monthly child support check would drop to $260.
She was confused over the discrepancy, noting how her current income was less than what she made in the past.
“They make both of these changes within eight days apart,” she wrote.
She also said her child support payments hadn’t changed in four years.
“Same thing happens to us,” one user replied. “It’s a joke.”
Another woman said she got a Social Security letter informing her she was overpaid by $30,000.
FACEBOOK REACTS
One person told Rubly to schedule an appointment with her local Social Security office and bring bank statements for income proof.
She went on to explain her son had received an overpayment notice on his SSI.
“But they are not allowed to take a full payment out, it has to be divided in monthly payments,” she wrote.
“And this is part of what they don’t tell you. Make that appointment as soon as you’re able to in person not via phone.”

She told Rubly to bring copies of important documents so she could leave them at the appointment for the SSA’s records.
The user also suggested the possibility of the SSA counting Rubly’s income aside from child support payments to cause the issue.
Another option would be submitting a form to request a waiver of the overpayment.
The form makes the SSA reconsider if a beneficiary was overpaid.
It could make Social Security appeal the decision and refrain from collecting the payment.
In some cases, people are still required to repay at different rates.
MORE SOCIAL SECURITY
One woman said she got a letter from Social Security informing her she was overpaid by $3,000.
She shared her dilemma on Facebook, asking users if she would need a lawyer.
The overpayment was dated May 2020, so one person suggested it was from a stimulus check the user received during pandemic times.
A daughter said her dad was charged $10,000 in overpayments due to his Medicaid purchases.
Meanwhile, one widow swore the mistake was on them when Social Security sent her an overpayment notice for $80,000.
