The benefits provide cash payments to qualifying candidates with a disability.
However, the woman said her brother was bumped from one of the programs.
The SSI benefits halted once the SSDI kicked in, and then she said her brother received a surprising letter.
It said her brother was overpaid on his Supplemental Security Income by $6,049.86.
While the Social Security Administration took $3,952.96 from his payment, he still owed $2,096.88.
“I think a mistake was done somewhere,” she wrote. “How do I help him get it fixed?”
CASH FOR KIDS
Her brother is 30, and the money he owed was from over two decades ago.
It was from when their mom got benefits for him as a 5-year-old.
However, their mother hadn’t disclosed certain rental income she received in 1996, and the SSA discovered this years later.
The user wanted to know if their brother could appeal the decision since he wasn’t aware of the money as a child.
“My mom got that money under his name when he was a minor over 25 years ago,” they wrote.
One person replied recommending the brother should apply for an overpayment waiver.
“It isn’t a guarantee of anything but sometimes they forgive overpayments if it was a legitimate mistake,” they said.
“Wow SSI/SSDI really keeps the tightest noose possible on people,” another user wrote.
Filing Waiver Form SSA-632
Those who cannot afford to pay back the overpayment amounts noted by the SSA or feel they should not have to can file a specific form.
- The form is identified as SSA-632 on the SSA website and can be filled out and submitted at a local office.
- “If you agree that you have been overpaid, but you feel
- you should not have to pay it back because you did not cause the overpayment and you cannot afford to repay it, you should file Form SSA-632,” the SSA notes on its website.
- It also lists multiple repayment options.
- Recipients with additional questions are urged to call 1-800-772-1213.
OVERPAYMENT WAIVER
According to the SSA, beneficiaries can request Form SSA-632BK when they receive overpayment notices.
The waiver requests for the SSA to reconsider its decision.
If approved, the overpayment isn’t collected to provide the beneficiary with slack from the financial constraint.
The SSA could also change the rate that a beneficiary must pay back the fee if it isn’t fully waived.
The form could be sent to a local Social Security office or call 1-800-772-1213 with any questions.
MORE SOCIAL SECURITY
A widow had no idea what to do when she found out her late husband had a $34,048.40 bill she now needed to pay.
Her husband had received disability benefits, but after he died Social Security took away the $1,900 monthly income he used to receive.
The woman said she gets $779 a month that she uses to cover rent and car expenses.
She worried about not being able to make the overwhelming payment on time.
